Coty Highsmith of Yonkers was found guilty by a jury of robbery and assault for the beating of a man in his 60s in a city apartment in November. The trial took nine days.
On Nov. 28 last year, Highsmith followed the man into a Highland Avenue apartment building at approximately 1 p.m. Highsmith choked his victim from behind, tackled him to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the face, causing multiple broken bones, according to Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. He then stole the man’s wallet with $300 in cash and fled the building.
Highsmith, 31, was identified as a suspect after investigators reviewed surveillance tapes. Investigators executed multiple search warrants, recovering the clothing Highsmith wore during the robbery, leading to his arrest.
Scarpino said that Highsmith is a persistent violent felony offender and faces two sentences of a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. The sentences will run concurrently. Sentencing has been scheduled for Jan. 15 next year.
